Is jasmin Moghbeli Kurd ? The Nasa astronaut who serves as the spacecraft commander on the Crew-7 mission, Jasmin Moghbeli, is recently on agenda of Turks and Kurds, not for her contribution to the science but “more importantly” for the matter whether she is Kurd or not.
Numbers of media outlets that target Kurdish-Speaking audience, published news stories on Axiom Mission 3 spacecraft which has Turkiye national astronut Alper Gezeravci aboard, docking with the International Space Station which currently operates under the command of NASA astronaut Jasmin Moghbeli who allegedly has Kurdish origin.
Debate over Jasmin Moghbeli’s national identity went rampant especially after Kurdistan based media network RUDAW published a news story with a striking headline that read “Kurdish astronaut Jasmin Moghbeli is to welcome Axiom Mission 3 Crew in the space”.
Some social media users rushed into Jasmin Moghbeli’s accounts, asking for “an immediate statement” to clarify the mystery over her identity.
Jasmin Moghbeli’s National Identity
Jasmin Moghbeli was born as the child of a family that immigrated to Germany in 1980 from Tehran, Iran, following a crackdown on 1979 Islamic Revolution supporters. Her father’s name is Kamran and her mother’s name is Farashtah. Both names are commonly used by ethnic Persians or Iranians.
Jasmin Moghbeli is believed to ethnically be Iranian as there is no statement nor any record that directly or indirectly implies she is ethnically Kurd.
